The Sabbath

What is the sabbath and to whom does it belong and what is to be used for and to whom was it given and why.

The word sabbath is used 137 times in the biblical text and sabbaths is used 35 times and one time in the Greek which was not correctly translated the word sabbathing. The first time the word is first used in the book of Leviticus. The first day that manna fell in the wilderness. Moses was instructing the Hebrews with the coming sabbath that they were to collect on the sixth day enough for them to cover the needs that the people would need for the Sabbath. To morrow is the rest of the Holy Sabbath unto the Lord. God had made enough manna so that the people could collect enough for the resting on the sabbath. In the Old Testament the Sabbath was referred to as the Sabbath of the Lord and the word is first used in the New Testament in Matthew chapter 12 when Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the corn field with his learners.

It is a day that the Hebrews recognized as belonging to the Lord God from the beginning as they travel across the wilderness into the promise land. It was a day that was considered to be Holy unto the Lord. It was a day that they were to rest from all of their work and enter into the rest that the Lord gave them. It allowed them to rest from the laborious work that they had been doing for six days before.

The Hebrew people were not always faithful to the keeping of the sabbath day unto the Lord and he had to have them taken in to captivity for seventy years so that the land could go through the sabbathing of the Lord. In the book of Nehemiah it was the ethnic Jews of that day that wanted to buy and sell on the sabbath in the city of Jerusalem. Nehemiah seeing the sabbath was not being kept, went to the gatekeepers and ordered the gates to be closed when the weekly Sabbath began at sundown the day before. Recognizing that it belong to the Lord, Nehemiah writes that the gentile merchants had to sleep outside of the gate once or twice before they found that the gate was not going to be opened for business as usual for all the merchants of the world. Nehemiah being a Hebrew knew the penalty for failure to keep the Sabbath unto the Lord from the writings of how God had punished the Hebrews once before. It is not until the writing of the book of Ezekiel in chapter twenty. The Lord is speaking to the children of Israel through Ezekiel telling them. “Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them. ..... and they shall be a sign between me and you that you may know that I am the Lord Your God.” Here God has established a coventent once again that the Hebrews are his people and that he is their God. There is no biblical record that the unrighteous gentile on the outside were to be part of the coventent between God and the house of Israel. You can see that if any gentiles lived in the city that they to came under the control of the Lord’s Sabbath that they were not to sell or buy within the city during the 24 hours of the sabbath. It was a sign to the house of Israel that God was their God. It set them apart from the unrighteous gentile on the outside the city walls. It kept was throughout the land of Israel for a sign to the world around that they were the people of God.

In the New Testament the first encounter of the Sabbath is when Jesus was going through the corn field on the sabbath with his learners when the ethnic Jews confront him about his going through the field on the sabbath and that his learners were collecting the heads of wheat and rubbing the chaff off and eating with unclean hands. Jesus then begins a dialogue with the ethnic Jews that he was the Lord of the sabbath. That the sabbath was made for man and not the man for the sabbath. It was the ethnic Jews that constantly accusing the Lord of what he was doing on his day. Finally when he enter into the Synagogue and that there was there a man with a withered hand. The ethnic Jews watched Jesus to see if he would heal the man that they, the ethnic Jews might accuse him. The ethnic Jews watched Jesus throughout his ministry to find reason to get rid of him. It finally came and they had what they need to conspire against him to the Roman head of state. The ethnic Jews claimed that he said he was the son of God and that was enough to bring the charges of death against before Pilate. But when Jesus

was in Galilee he went to the Synagogue and taught them. Jesus taught often in the synagogue and in one session he stood and was delivered to the scroll of Isaiah. An he said this day it is fulfilled what is written the book of Isaiah. That the Spirit of the Lord is on me; because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and opening of prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. The balance of this verse he was at that time unable to quote for himself. As Jesus taught in the synagogue he reveal one of the greatest tools for understand of the biblical text. The Gap Theory. It will be covered in other sessions. The ethnic Jews of Jesus day hate both what he did and what he said about himself.

In the New Testament we don’t find anything about the sabbath that is for or against the keeping of the sabbath. One can only says that it was not cancelled or changed by direct order and we can assume that the Sabbath of the Lord is still in effect for the house of Israel during this present time. It is still a coventent between him and his people the house of Israel. Though it does appear from the writing of Paul that those in Rome and Galatia and Corinth met on the first day of the week rather than on the last day of the week as had been honored in the Old Testament. There is one verse in the New Testament in which the word should be sabbathing for the people of God to enter into for an on going rest. All things had been finished and no longer does one have to do something for his redemption. It is the setting of one day in seven to rest from one’s servitude and do the things of the Lord.

The keeping of the Sabbath as on the first day of the week was kept in this country until the merchants wanted to keep open their businesses for the doing of business. Today the only remembrance we have of the sabbathing of the people is that the people get a day off from work to watch TV and rest for the job ahead for the next week. In one of the world fairs is was said that only the United States of America closed their events on Sunday all others were open for business. Other nations of the world have their day that they set aside to honor their false gods of this world. There are some religious orders that still honor the saturday sabbath in the evangelical world but also the strict Jews still keep the sabbath from friday evening at sundown to saturday evening at sundown.

It the setting aside one day in seven to worship the lord as a symbol that he is your God and that he has a contract with you if you are of the house of Israel. In the prophecies I find no mention of a sabbathing after the Lord returns to get his people and to enter into thousand year reign here on earth as the Stone Kingdom after Jesus is crowned king of kings and pronounced Lord of Lords for all the world to know that he is the son of the living God. That he came the first time only for the house of Israel who are the people of God chosen out of those that he did not chose. They the people of God were to declared to be righteous and all others are then the unrighteous of the world that fight against the things of God. It is the reason that the blue laws that had been in force from the beginning of this country were finally done away to show that they are not the people of God.

The keeping of the Sabbath is not a feather in your hat before God if you are not one of his chosen out ones. The keeping of the Sabbath does not make one righteous, keep it and you are still unrighteous, afterwards and forever more if you are a gentile or an ethnic Jew.
